Meet the Creator: Aquilah Robinson, M.Ed

Your child can read the whole page out loud. Ask them what it was about, and they've got nothing.

You're not imagining it. Their eyes moved left to right, the words came out fine, and none of it stayed. They weren't talking to the book — they were just getting through it. Words they didn't know slid right past, and the meaning went with them. After enough of that, a kid quietly decides they're just bad at reading, and starts dreading the questions at the end.

I see that moment every week, in classrooms and in tutoring sessions. So I teach kids to talk back to the text while they read — to notice, to wonder, to catch themselves when something stops making sense. A handful of moves they can run on their own, on any book, without waiting for an adult to check. If they do hit a word they can't get through, the decoding strategies are right there too.

A child who knows what they're thinking while they read can finally say it out loud. "I don't get this part." That sentence changes everything. In class. With teachers. At home, reading by themselves. Everywhere.

That's what I build toward: self-advocacy. Reading is where it starts.

These are the same strategies that work with my tutoring students in grades 3 through 6. I put them in the journal so kids would always have them, even when I'm not there — independent, instead of relying on me as their reading tutor.

What Makes Us Different

Most children's reading journey follows the standard path their teacher lays out. That path works — for most kids. Some children need something more: additional support, additional strategies, additional practice their classroom routine doesn't fully cover. The training and resources available to help with that can vary widely. It depends on where you live. It depends on the size of your child's school. That shouldn't determine whether your child gets what they need.

Home life looks different for every family, too. Maybe you're working full-time. Maybe you're home during the day. Maybe your own education stopped at a GED. Maybe it went all the way to a doctorate.
